Hey, I am Andy Lohner, Austrian graphic designer and visual artist based in London.

This website shows a selection of the artwork I created over the last few years. Everyday life, travelling I have done and cultures and people i have met
are main influences in my work. Growing up partially in North Florida and the European Alps, showed me the biodiversity we have on our planet.
Love to nature and it's protection reflect in my work frequently, just as the love for music.

I have a tendency of using of my handwriting and hand made psychodelic typography, as an element of creation - to the point were they get almost abstract.
The information transported by the words usually underlines the topic, but more important to me is the fact that they visually underline the topic, making the
piece communicate. A concept we also use at our Creative Studio (Bubbles & Bones). "Communication is more than just words" - David Carson

Trying new materials and medias - If it's shaping a Surfboard, painting it so it becomes a piece of art, taking it out into the waves and riding it or if it's
doing a series using acrylics and screenprint, adding layer by layer or if it's just a single piece on a canvas or a wrecked LP - is what keeps my work going.
The process is my goal!!

a day out with my budd roman
SEE MORE PICS
Thanks to my Family, Friends and all the nice
people which i am stoked to have met during my
life. Let's see where it'll bring me;)!

This is a selection of pieces and sketches i did over the years, to show where I came from and where I am going artwise.
It started as black and white illustration and turned into colourful pieces. I was never interested in using too much canvas.
It was good from time to time, but never became my main medium. My work earlier work was mostly done on paper. Later
I started to use differnet material, such as wrecked boards, broken LPs... Those materials just spoke to me more then a
blank canvas. They told a story by themselves before using them. After all it's a good way of recycling and it usually
makes a much more interesting canvas.

HENDRIX PORTRAIT - 2010
acryl on ricepapper, 2010

The Face is well know, better the the well composed and played tunes.
Something what happens when genius and sellman's talent gethers. In this
portait the music is the forgroung, as the face is formed by the titels of the
"Axis: Bold as Love" Album, giving the genius the possibility to drop into the
back for a bit. What is it that people what more then what we get from talented
people? Am I better using his face? It seems that his music is still original enough
to make one still think who was the man behind it. Even it a bit ironic or hypocrite
I ended up doing it again, another portrait and i must say I am proud of it! MORE TO COME

The music made me think!
WORSE THING;)!

PARANOID - VINYL 2010
acryl on a recycled LP, early jan 10
SEE DETAILS

The inspiration came from the psycodalic print in the center of the vinyl,
which reminded my of the Black Sabbath Paranoid SIngle. So it was simple,
check out the lyrics of the song and you will find out why you can spot the lonely
wolf. I coloured him white because of two reasons. Firstly to pop out more and
secondly to make him look a bit more like a ghost, who could disappear any second.

THE CREAM - VINYL 2009
acryl on a recycled LP, late dec 09
SEE DETAILS

I started to paint several LPs by spinning the vinyls on the turntable. After getting
the colours composed right, i would lay back and let it speak to me. This one was obvious,
i had just put on a record of The Cream onto my turntable. With the first cords of the
whiteroom came the spark - The Cream! It might not look like a design for the band
but it made it clear what i should do. It is plain, simple and works!

THE ROCKETMAN - VINYL 2009
acryl on a recycled LP, late dec 09
SEE DETAILS

I believe that this one was the first LP which I spinned colours on. The rocketman is a
symbol of freedom and simplicity. There is this memory in my head when I took my brother
the first time down to the river to surf some highwater riverwaves. I think it was his second
or third try when he fell with a superman pose into the water. He recalled that in this moment,
he heard the the Elton John song The Rocket Man. I remember walking up the river back to the wave,
seeing him totally relaxed enjoying the moment. So this vinyl is dedicated to the song - check out
the lyrics, they are simple but they tell a good story of a settled working man.

THE PIANO MAN - VINYL 2009
acryl on a recycled LP, late dec 09
SEE DETAILS

This one must have been the second one I did. The Piano Man is a song I know since I've been
a small child, there is a cassette which has the chart of Rock 104 North Floridas Rock Station
and Billy Joel had the first five slots in it, with The Piano Man being number one. The song
has a timeless lyric for me, simple and tells a good story. I took the LP cover of the Record
and mad him look a bit older and more like a ghost. I used the lyric part "it is said and sweet
and i knew it complete, when I wore a younger man's cloths" to underline the faded look of the image.

THE GREEN ONE - VINYL 2009
acryl on a recycled LP, late dec 09 till feb 10
SEE DETAILS

My goal in this record was to get fresh green earthy colours together. I started to scratch
the colour and write some words into it, after spinning the colours. It is an impression
of roots and music, combined with some personal feelings. It has a story and expression in one.

HOAGY CARMICHAEL - MIXED MEDIA 2008
acryl and pigments on 400g papper, five time screenprinted back colour, summer 08
SEE SERIES

The print started with a sketch I did of hoagy carmichael, a hollywood musician I stumbled over
in a small shopping-center in rovaniemi, lapland. it was in a box of one euro prized records and
thanks to louis armstong, i decided to buy another record of an old musicmaster.

The first time i was listening to the record was on the way down to tampere. i had to get out of
the train at some point to check something about my ticket. when i went out of the train the whole
scenery was magic! fresh snow, red purple and blue skies. people with thick coats getting off and
on the train. the conductor was calling me to come quickly. i was tattered between running back and
getting my camera or getting my ticket done, somewhere in the middle of nowhere.

in the end i decided to get on the train. otherwise my friends down south would have waited for me another day.
that's why the print is so special to me. it pictures that beautiful scenery of which i never took a picture.

IRA HAYES - IRIS/SCREENPRINT 08
two colour irsprinted, one screen black, summer 08
SEE SERIES

This is actually a gigposter, well that's what it should have been. i guess
it's just a bit to exquisite for it (too small stock for the purpose;)

the topic is the ira hayes bird, somewhere in the swamp. it has f-holes on his neck just like on
a fency guitar. there are strings running down his neck turning into a writing which says love...music!!

ira hayes is written behind the bird. next to it there are three gig-dates. they all come good across,
thanks to the irisprint, giving it the feeling to be rather a series than a stock.

HEADMANKID - ILLUSTRATION 03
watercolour illustration on paper, fall 03

I did this illustration back in my days, during my education in artschool.
For sure one of my key pieces!

PORTRAIT MONT MATRE - SKETCH 08
biro sketch on paper, summer 08

Sometimes in life you see really deep going character,
which their face seem to tell their whole stories.

WAVE ILLUSTRATION - SKETCH 08
inc sketch on paper, summer 08

Illustration of text and waves tell the story that nature
is by far stronger than humans. Something we often forget.
Waves are only one of the things which give us a small tast for it.
But never forget what pleasure it can give us, when we work with it!

SELFPORTRAIT - SKETCH 08
inc sketch on paper, summer 08

A quick sketch of a face, it turned out that it looked a bit like me.
It wasn't ment to be a selfportait, just something what happend.

HANGTEN - SKETCH 08
biro on paper, summer 08

The headman hanging ten. Just a little sketch i did.

LITTLE FALCON - SKETCH 08
inc on paper, summer 08

One of the many quick sketches I did, the alive stroke sometimes can give far more
impression than some of the big piece, 'cause it reflects the emotion.

WOODHEAD BALI - PENCIL 07
pencil on paper, done in bali summer 07

I did this one after a good surf session in bali. They have an amazing woodcraft culture,
something you can see all over the island, in their architecture as well as in their traditional cloths.
Something which they might loose with the wrong kind of tourism!

TEDDYBEAR - SKETCH 07
pencil on paper, 07

A simple sketch of a teddybear. Some might say inspired by a corn album,
honestly I don't - it might be it might won't be, just a simple easy sketch.

CANDLES - SKETCH 07
pencil on paper, 07

I did this sketch while listening to soundgarden, probably one of the best bands
of the ninties, in my eyes every record rocks! Candles burned out yesterday...
a phrase which burned into my brain, Cornell wrote it in thought of his old roommate,
which died, that's how i would recall it.

WOODHEAD NUMBER ONE - BETWEEN 03 & 06
biro on paper, 06

This was the first woodhead i've ever done, it is dated 06 but honestly i
think it was before, maybe even 04. Well sometime ago, I have done them ever since.
Used that one for a sticker.

HATMAN - BETWEEN 03 & 06
biro on paper, 06

Similar with the headman, I do not know when I did this one,
but i can say it is quite some time ago. Here he is, the master of reality!

NATURE VS URBAN - BETWEEN 03 & 06
ink on paper, 06

I combined a few typical elements I used to do. It was only a brief sketch,
but somehow it just lasted that long and still pops up on the website.
There is something about the strokes and wildness, the two people
looking up and thinking what went wrong.

FALCON ROOTS - BETWEEN 03 & 06
ink on paper, 06

I always was fascinated by birds of pray. These two falcons are
combined with the style I started to develop during that time,
the style of wood grain and roots.

FALCON PLANT - BETWEEN 03 & 06
ink on paper, 06

It shows a plant which is made out of different elements of nature.
Falcons, waves and a lot of the things which always fascinated me.
Nature is really a great thing in our life, something we shoud be
more aware of and something we should take more care of!

I started surfing in Florida in 2000. I will never forget, when my father joined me into the water
for my first waves after a big thunderstorm at Crescent Beach. He knew that it would be love
at first sight. I could tell by the way he looked at me, when the friends we stayed with,
told us we could use their old grandfathers surfboards. I got up on the second wave and
have been riding this wave ever since. A wave that might have given me the same feeling
again, was the one I rode with my very first selfshaped surfboard.
It lit a flame - conbining art, craft and performance!

It is not hard to become a mountaineer growing up in the alps. It feel's good to combine another
one of my passions with my artwork. Snowboarding is a very creative sport, in the aspect of your
riding style, choosing lines or doing airs. Here is an overview of the graphics i have done!

Enlighten - 09/10
Lib Tech Sketch - 09/10

Lamar Morph - 08/09
Soulfull coloured design, which tell alot of stories, onto a tapered soulfull freerider powderstick. Some is in our face and the others
are well hiddn. It is a board which a rider can always discover through out the years new, in finding new little details, stories hints.
CLOSE UP: The collage is made out of diverent ethnic faces. In Austria we say "The way you haller in to the woods
is the way it will haller back" and that's pretty much what the whole graphic is about.

Lamar Ainjel - 08/09
It is a girls twintip, which means the board is the same ridden both ways. That's the reason why the the graphic is
centered. Abstract in the begining up it tell's it story it's self. Girls sometime just have bigger balls then guys.
CLOSE UP: On the close up you can see that the pattern is part of the girls hair, which she is about to cut off.
You can also see the nice grain of the bamboo inlay.

Lamar Endless - 08/09
This is again a twintip design (see discr. #3). It should not just feel the same ridden both ways, it should
also look the same. Very dark design, all in black gold and silver. From farway you can see a mystery forrest,
but if you look closer you can spot all the faces and skulls in it.
CLOSE UP: Golden skulls, in pirate style. They have a twisty story to it.

Lamar Realm - 08/09
The design was made for a skate shop at home in Graz/Austria in 2004. Which was the key to the series which was done.
This was the pieces the artdirector Sonya Laurenssen was going for.

LTD Sinister - 08/09
A earth design with a lot of sketchy parts in it, which keeps it alive. The graphic is all about
balance and traveling - all about keeping our planet clean! Give and get!

LTD Helix - 08/09
This is what comes out when alot of friends start drawing faces. A very sketchy but also detailed graphic - a lot to see! Thanks to Sims & Fu.
CLOSE UP: Type close up. Background of the writting done by Sims.

My name is Tom Lohner - born in Austria and I travelled many places.
I've seen pelicans dive into water, I've been to rocky beaches in California
where you think about life and more, I've had not so easy times when I was 17
and lived somewhere else then home, I met people who were there for me when I
needed someone to talk to, I met someone who makes the best hot chocolate in
the world, I felt the fear of dying while climbing a mountain, flying a plane or being under water,
I fell in love and I have a brother: All these images and memories made me to the person I am today.

I started creating "art" since the day I can think. Maybe influenced by my mother and later by my brother it was always clear
for me to do something creative for living. For me it's important or actually necessary to beware the inner child - this is
what makes you dream and do art. I love to paint or create collages on wrecked articles - turning something worthless into
something precious. From time to time I enjoy a plain canvas - but I just love to have something that already has a story
of its own, before even touching the surface with a pencil, brush or any color.
While working on a piece I feel connected to the image or design - "I am one with what I do". The process of creation is
something magical and is always supported by music! Music and art are very close relatives.

Discribing my style is always difficult. But if I had to put it in words I'd say that I reduce in a complex and abstract way.
Lines and spaces create an image. I love to use typography and words surrounded by complex squiggly lines. Always considering
the main theme or what I want to tell with what I do.

The sky is the limit - and I will never stop to develop my way of creating!

In this section you 'll see a selection of my favorite pieces that i have done over the years.
They are here to show the progress and the directions, which my art is going.
what started with black and white illustration, went to a direction of acrylis and colors,
the next step was to change the medium my art is painted on.
I just love to paint on something different than a canvas
- I love it when my underground tells a story on its own.

THE FLYING MOMENT - 2010
acryl on wrecked stakeboard, March 2010

The moment of true meeting can never be chosen.

SPACETRAVEL - 2009
acryl on wrecked stakeboard, Jan. 2009

What if we could fly to a nother planet? And that for a really affordable price.
I refered to a quite typical 50's advert using also pastelic colors to match.

SPACETRAVEL - 2009
mexid media on wrecked skateboard, April 2009

"A little bitter" - influenced by Alice in Chains
song of the same name.

HAPPYLISTENER DECK - 2008
oil on wrecked skateboard, late summer. 2008

From the series of my nonsensemachines - we have a headphone related machine
The same named picture (designed as an old commercial discribes the machine's function)

ON HER WAY - 2010
acryl on vinyl, July 2010

„We become what we believe. You turn into water & sand.“
The scene is set in a „death valley“ -like environment.
A spaceship - resembling the mind, taking off at the break of
dawn, after a body was buried in a desert. The only spectators
are two hounds and a crow.

BOTH REALITIES - 2009
acryl on vinyl, December 2009 - January 2010. My first painted vinyl.

„We become what we believe. You turn into water & sand.“
The scene is set in a „death valley“ -like environment.
A spaceship - resembling the mind, taking off at the break of
dawn, after a body was buried in a desert. The only spectators
are two hounds and a crow.

PRESENT OF PRESENT - 2009
acryl on LP, January 2010. A piece I did after an idea hit me.

There are three main messages:
Yesterday gone (means that yesterday is gone. It doesn't exist anymore).
Tomorrow not (means that tomorrow is not there. We will always wait for
tomorrow, which is the future and therefore quite unpredictable). Today
now (means that today is right now. It is the moment that is magic and if
you know that, you are king of your life). The message king of life is
symbolized through a crown which hovers above the clock - drum.

WE ARE FRAGILE - BOX 2010
acryl on an old toster packaging box, early June 2010

6 boxwalls:
the toppart: "we are fragil" (Furious Rage Against Global Industrial Leakage)
the bottompart: "lets avoid the bottom"
sidepart.1: industrial humanity - impersonalized
sidepart 2: nature prevails
sidepart 3: the planets choice to survive
sidepart 4: what we leave behind...

Artist statement:
"I care about what we do - the impacts of our actions - concerning our soroundings/ the big
ball we are allowed to live on - still trying not to be oversensitve. After the latest news,
I just had to give my statement. I therefore thank the London Mile Gallery who have invited
and inspired me to do this artpiece."

CRASHED WASPMACHINE - 2009
oil on wood, 2009

An outtake of the artwork for Stupid Mary (metalband from Austria).
Here in combination with the sketch I did - the whole peice (album)
appears very mechanical - music and art "livin in harmony".

ARTOM - FALL 2008
mixed media (ink & acryl) on paper, fall 2008

arTom is art and Tom combined in one word. A wild and phantastic szenario showing two worlds: on
the left a little mountain village and on the right deamons who appear from a phantastic and surreal
background. arTom (the words) hover in a space which is created by my own two replicated hands.
Hidden in the lower part of the piece stands the phrase "Trust in your imagination" - which tells it all.

The artpiece is displayed in a private collection of one of our collectors.

SHARKBITE - 2009
oil on canvas, Dec. 2009

Mde out of tin, but still deadly! Don't underestimate a sharkbite,
even when it's from a toy...

FISHHEAD - 2009
ink on paper, April 2009

Did that one in Madrid. Inspired by a wooden table...

YETIHEAD - 2009
ink on paper, April 2009

I finished that one also in Madrid. I did this piece just after finishing the fish.

HEART OVERLOAD - 2009
mixed media on paper, May 2009

Since I still work with analog photography, I found some films which were wrong developed.
I decided to include them in this particular artproject.

GHOSTRIDE - 2009
watercolor on paper beginning of march 2009

Showing fears we have, which will
be conquered by ourselves.

HAPPYLISTENER PRINT - 2008
acryl on paper, winter 2008

The additional art"commercial" to a piece (happy listener)
which is connceted to this painting. "Yes... we can put a smile
on your face, even when listening to depressing music."

SKULL - EARLY 2008
ink and pencil on paper, March 2010

You don't have to like every person you meet. As well as you shouldn't be harmed
if a nother person isn't too fond of you. I did this piece out of an emotional experience.
I am happy to have had this moment - it opend the door to a whole new way of creating!

THE START - 2006
mixed media on paper, some time in 2006

An early piece - but it gave me direction to where I went.
Maybe therefore also the name (chosen per incident)
